In order to talk about this topic, I’ve had to take a bit of a dive into the Covid-19 and vaccine misinformation that I’ve been avoiding since the pandemic began. Having done so, it’s hard for me to be angry at anyone.

What the Disinformation Dozen and websites that promote misinformation all have in common is that they prey on your fear of being duped, bamboozled, used and abused.

And then they dupe, bamboozle, use and abuse you.

You know how these emotions feel. We all do. It’s hard to remember a time when governments weren’t abusing their power. Pharmaceutical companies have had blood on their hands for decades.

It is not only understandable to be skeptical, but even to be aggressively distrustful. These boys cried wolf far too many times to be so easily trusted now.

But that’s exactly the problem humanity is currently facing. Because these entities abused their power, we completely ignored them when a real threat appeared.

The moral of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” wasn’t to close your ears to those who fooled you; the moral was that people shouldn’t be crying wolf just to screw with others, because in order to keep ourselves safe, we always have to check if the threat is real.
