How to Measure Progress in Society

As much as the Western world (and a couple of hubs in the East) has made massive strives in the last eighty to one hundred years since World War II, the Holocaust, Great Depression and World War I, we’re still messing up.

The lessons were not learnt and as a result, the same mistakes are being repeated. Some of the players of today have new gripes but some are talking about the very same things that the losers of three generations ago preached as gospel.

When I say “losers,” I don’t mean to demean them. I used the term because their ideas lost the ideological war.

World War II featured the rise of nationalism and a doubling-down on superiority and racism. The Holocaust is primarily about racial superiority and demonizing of out-groups. The Great Depression was due to financial recklessness, turning a blind eye to important issues (in this case, agriculture) and focusing solely on the economic boom. World War I was caused by nationalism and imperialism.

These major historic events took place between 1914 and 1945. But it’s 2021 now. Nationalism was dying down but has seen a resurgence in the last decade in the West. Racism has not been adequately addressed for it to finally die. Group superiority is so prolific we now base superiority on who has made the most victims and who are the most victimized. Financial…
